“X % of patients found the side effects acceptable” strikes me as far more authentic than “manageable toxicity”, and acknowledges who’s actually experiencing the AEs!

When the patient & oncologist meet, there are 2 experts in the room: one embodied & one necessarily removed

It was a privilege to volunteer my time to speak with the incoming class of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine students about the importance of a collaborative physician/patient relationship. I look forward to this lecture each year. Wonderful to welcome special guest Griffin Hurt as I talked about the value of a strong support system. Two excellent questions from the students: (1) What restored your confidence in your surgeon after your medical accident? I’m honored and excited to share that I have joined the Board of Inventus Group as a Non-Executive Advisor.This opportunity is deeply meaningful—not because of the title, but because of what it represents.For years, I have advocated for a simple but powerful belief: patients deserve a seat at the table. The people most impacted by healthcare decisions should have a voice in shaping them.Inventus is building technology and solutions designed to improve the clinical trial experience, and I am inspired by their commitment to putting patients at the center of that work. Together, we share a vision of reducing patient burden, improving accessibility, and making clinical research more inclusive, compassionate, and effective. As both a patient and caregiver, I have experienced firsthand the challenges that patients face when navigating complex healthcare systems. Bringing that lived experience into board-level conversations is not only a privilege—it is a responsibility.To me, this appointment is bigger than one individual. It is a signal that the patient voice belongs in leadership discussions, strategic decisions, and innovation efforts across our industry.
